Car hire in Ireland

There are numerous car hire companies in Ireland therefore rates are competitive - shop around to get the best deal. Cars can be hired from most city locations and all airports and ports. Book in advance of travel especially during summer months and check for terms and conditions of hire. Car hire companies usually require driving licences from the state of residency and not international driving licences. In the majority of cases a full unendorsed licence must have been held for 12 months. Most hire cars are manual gear change; please specify automatic gear change if required. Before driving off from the hire company remember to check for dents and scratches to the vehicle as you are likely to be charged for unrecorded damage. Check insurance cover before hiring. For those with children remember to book child seats in advance. Road maps are usually included in cost of hire. Some of the popular car hire companies include:

Avis

Argus Rentacar

Budget

Europcar

Hertz

Driving in Ireland

All traffic drives on the left hand side of the road in both the Republic and Northern Ireland. Since most airports and ports are outside of population centres, those coming from countries that drive on the right hand side of the road will have time to acclimatise to the road layout. Speed limits for roads are displayed in kilometres per hour and road distances are given in kilometres. Care should be exercised as many Irish roads can narrow and have sharp bends. Animals such as sheep and cattle can appear on roads and slow farm vehicles such as tractors often use main roads. Seat belt use is compulsory and the use of mobile phones is banned while driving. It is an offence to drive under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Roads
Ireland has an extensive national network of roads. Motorways mainly serve Dublin. Euro routes can be found on approaches to sea ports. The network of National Primary Routes connects most major towns with by-passes around towns increasing in numbers. Regional routes are country roads which connect rural communities with larger towns. For information on latest road conditions, route planning and other travel information visit the AAroadwatch web site.

Fuel prices
Fuel prices in Ireland are usually below European averages but are still prone to the fluctuation of international oil prices. Fuel is sold as either unleaded petrol or diesel ( Gaz or Gasoline ) and prices are charged per litre. There are petrol stations in most population centres in Ireland but prices may vary in different areas. The AAroadwatch displays average fuel prices on its web site at http://www.aaroadwatch.ie/petrolprices

Rail Services

Iarnród Éireann provides national rail services including intercity services from Dublin to Castlebar and Westport. For further information including timetables and booking details visit the Irish Rail web site.

Bus Services

Bus Éireann provides local, National Expressway and international bus services. Local services run between Achill, Westport and Castlebar. For further details visit the Bus Éireann web site.
